Do you think 955 words over the 2000 word limit is too much?

Use footnotes.

Ha! I just finished putting 336 words in footnotes. I think it is acceptable now.

2659 = 2000 word limit + 200 word leway, so now I am only really 459 words over the limit - which is still a lot.

I'm going back to edit again.

Thanks for the advice.

Yes. It is too far over the limit.

However, 2271 is fine, I would think. I doubt anyone will actually count the number of words and with the way you write, I suspect those extra 271 words won't even be noticed; your reader will be so entralled he'll forget about the limit.

: )

Sounds like you've got this task nearly brought to completion!

Enthralled, ha! This lecturer has already told me that if I "want to sound extremely articulate, [I] have to use less words." She'll notice the extra words but 2271 is acceptable. I just hope with all my pruning it still makes sense.

I am nearly finished. I stopped editing last night because I'd looked at the paper too long and it all seems to be the same after a while. So, later today I may finish it off. It's due tomorrow so I'm glad most of the work is done.

Oh. We have to declare the number of words in an essay. But not the number of words in the footnotes. :)

I handed in an essay on Thursday. The limit was 4000 words - I wrote 3700, but had another 1900 words in the footnotes. Actually, I think that's illegal - it's not supposed to be more than 25% of what's in the main text. Oh well...
